All the team at inlingua Malta is really proud to congratulate Donovan Gatt, an irreplaceable member of our staff who has won a poetry competition with the poem below.
Blue Tongued Lizard ﴾Tiliqua scincoides﴿
A glassy sheen wraps your gas cylinder body,
a Whopper asphyxiated in cling film.
A lunatic glassblower madly in love with asymmetry and disproportion
blew your lardy shape of fatty phlegm baroque
in a fit of whooping cough.
Your shape is God’s draft, abandoned, unpatented
whisked away by whiskied Mephistopheles.
You are God’s aborted abortion not creative creation.
Basking in UV light like an obese stripper at Wild Kyote,
your tiramisu blotches are hideous birthmarks,
your armadillo scales welded together
like tectonic plates locked on the earth’s crust.
In your Tutankhamen eyes, continents waltz and
Triceratopses graze stubborn caked lands,
In your gill ears still echoes
the crack and crackle of yawning earth crippled by menstrual cramps,
as jittery juices of evolving evolution fizzled within its magma ovaries,
In your lava nostrils lingers the smell of sweaty ancestral plumage.
Like a glutton goddess floating in the Elysian Fields,
you suckle on mango pulp, frutti di bosco
and burp the liquorish gumminess of escargots de Bourgogne
powdered in your crematorium mouth.
You are the chosen one among the herps.
You know not some puddle where spotty spawn is party food,
You know not how it feels to be a shell-shocked convict,
your toes hacking your yolky cerebellum.
You retain the mummified coldness of a reptile defrosted in the bain-marie heat of womb.
Look! She’s been eating raspberry slush again! my nephew yells out.
Your cobalt blue fork flickering in mockery of the world,
redeems you, My lady.
